The Surrey Downs League History...
The Surrey Downs Cricket League, as the name suggests covers an area based round the
Surrey Downs and membership is made up of twenty one village clubs.
The League was formed in 1975 under the name of the Arun Valley League and consisted of
just seven clubs from Surrey and Sussex. Over the years additional clubs joined and a
second division was started in 1978, and sponsorship obtained to assist clubs financially.
The end of 1995 brought about major change when all the Sussex Clubs resigned to join
Leagues in their own county.
Replacement clubs in Surrey were admitted to the league and 1996 started with twelve
clubs.
The present sponsors were obtained
for the 2006, and the league enjoys excellent relations
with them, supplying as they do the match balls. In 1997the name of the league was changed to to reflect the area in which member clubs play
- hence The Surrey Downs League.
During the Winter
of 1999/2000 Paul Griffiths asked the current chairman of the league
(Jack Ball) - What about a Website?
Paul suggested
www.SurreyDowns.Org in
keeping with www.lords.org i.e.
no .uk and that was it. The website is considered to be one of the
better ones in Surrey and perhaps the UK. Considering the size
of the budget we haven't got, this is indeed fantastic feed back.
2006
the league was restructured to include 4 divisions of 10 clubs, which
constitutes about 21 clubs with a mix of first and second teams.
