Purley
v
Tadworth U10’s
North East Central
Despite bowling really well and getting off to a solid start when
batting, we lost wickets at crucial times and fell too far behind
the required run rate to ever threaten a solid Purley side. On an
overcast morning we won the toss and chose to field. We felt that
even without MJ in the team our strength was in our bowling attack
and had we batted first and not set a decent total Purley would have
cruised to an easy victory. Also to know what you have to beat can
be to your advantage.
The
start we made was better than could have been hoped for. Alex & Adam
opened the bowling and took a number of wickets throughout their two
over spells which left Purley in the negative as the first pair
trudged off. Their fast and accurate bowling was far too good for
the Purley openers to deal with.
We continued to bowl well,
From here though the wickets dried up and the Purley batsmen began
to turn up the heat. Henry had to leave the field with an injury to
his knee and for a while we were down to only six outfielders. The
boys did really well and covered the ground well but inevitably
there were gaps and the Purley batsmen were beginning to find them.
What we weren't expecting was as the last pair of batsmen walked to
the wicket with their team on 30-40 runs was what happened next.
Alex and Adam who bowled so well at the beginning of the innings
both struggled with their line and length and facing two in form and
destructive Purley batsmen were truly taken to the sword and hit all
over the park. In a few short minutes we went from a great position
to a pretty bad one. Purley finished on 84 and we knew we were going
to have to bat really well to have any chances of overhauling their
total.
As it turned out we didn't bat well enough despite Eddy and Leon
getting us off to the perfect start putting on 14 runs and not
losing any wickets. Alex and Finlay had a flourish in the middle of
the innings and William batted very well towards the end, but we
lost too many wickets bowled by straight deliveries, something we
will be working very hard on this Friday.
Man of the Match
It was a good all round bowling performance but the player who stood
out and is this week’s man of the match is William. His wicket
keeping was faultless, he took a great catch and he batted really
well.
My
thanks to the Under 10 Squad and Nick Abear for the above match
report.
